#41 – Joe’s Kansas City BBQ
Multiple locations throughout the metro
Cost: $$
Features: Gas station, convenience store, tasty BBQ.
Good for: Locals, tourists and meat lovers.
Tip: Head to Joe’s about 30+ minutes before you want to eat. The line is almost always out the door.
Joe’s is a Kansas City staple. It’s a classic, like Gates and Arthur Bryant’s. Everyone knows of it, and almost everyone loves it. Famously located in a gas station, Joe’s Kansas City BBQ has won numerous accolades, including America’s Best BBQ Restaurant in 2017.
Joe’s Kansas City BBQ
Joe’s now has three locations in Kansas City, but the most popular is the original. Located at 47th and Mission Road in Kansas City, Kansas, Joe’s operates inside a functioning gas station and convenience store.
This place isn’t fancy. It shares its space with a convenience store, but man is the food good.
Be prepared to wait if you go near peak hours, as there is almost always a line out the door (and even wrapped around the building). The line usually moves pretty fast, and don’t worry about a table. By the time you place your order at the counter and they call your name, a table will open up.
The other locations are newer and nicer, but still have the same great BBQ, friendly staff and efficient service.
Joe’s Kansas City BBQ Favorites
I don’t think you can go wrong at Joe’s, but they’re most known for:
- The Z-Man – Probably their most popular sandwich with brisket, smoked provolone cheese and crispy onion rings on a toasted Kaiser roll.
- Fries – I don’t order fries at BBQ restaurants because there are always other great side options *coleslaw, beans, potato salad, etc.) But Joe’s fries are amazing.
- Ribs – Some of the best in KC.
- Burnt Ends – Seriously melt-in-your-mouth.
Whatever you do, and whatever the wait, don’t skip this Kansas City classic. xx, Libbie.
