Mud Pie is a vegan bakery and coffee shop on 39th Street in Kansas City, Missouri. Like a few businesses on 39th Street, Mud Pie is located in an old home, making the eclectic shop the perfect spot to grab a sweet treat, find an open spot and catch up with a friend.
About Mud Pie Bakery
Mud Pie opened its original location on 39th Street in 2011. In its 7 year history, it has become a 39th Street staple for vegans and non-vegans alike. Two floors of the old house is filled with tables and sofas, creating an eclectic, yet welcoming vibe.
I think vegan recipes, especially baked goods, can get a bad rap. However, Mud Pie knows what they are doing. Everything I’ve had is so tasty – you would never even guess it is vegan.
They also take special orders for cakes and cupcakes. They come in some amazing varieties, including:
- Chai Spice – Cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg spiced cake, topped with a vanilla icing and chai caramel made from their housemade chai concentrate
- Lemon Kiss – Lemon zest cake, filled with layers of lemon curd and finished with a lemon icing and candied lemon wedge.
- Strawberries n’ Cream – Vanilla cake, with a strawberry compote filling and topped with strawberry icing.
- S’mores Cake – Chocolate cake with a graham cracker crust covered with vanilla icing, pressed with more graham cracker crumbs, topped with chocolate ganache and roasted marshmallows.
They also sell their baked goods and coffee to businesses around the Kansas City metro, and recently opened their second location in Overland Park.
What to get at Mud Pie Bakery
Their baked goods vary daily, but usually include a mix of muffins, scones, bars and cupcakes. Sometimes they even have gluten-free bagels. On my Sunday afternoon visit, I shared a super tasty Lemon Bundt Cake and Banana Crumble Muffin with my friend, Karlee, and would get them both again.
Their coffee and chai is great too. They serve coffee from a local Kansas City roaster, Oddly Correct, but also serve small-batch coffee daily.
